IN AN EFFORT TO GIVE Samantha the space Kate felt she needed, Will did not go back to his office at the airstrip—where Samantha was working on the advertising campaign. Instead, he went over to his parents’ house on Spring Street, fixed himself some lunch and then holed up in his father’s study. Using the information on his PDA, he printed out the week’s flight schedule for his company, then picked up the phone and began calling the pilots who worked for him. An hour later, he had arranged to be off until the following Monday, and began doing some research of his own.

It took a while, but eventually he found what he needed in the Beaumont Daily Register archives online. The headline of the article alone was enough to sucker punch him in the gut: Boating Accident Claims Parents, Two Children Survive.

Will had just started to read the devastating account when the front door opened. Footsteps sounded in the foyer, then Samantha stood framed in the doorway, hauling the additional suitcase of clothing and laptop computer she had brought back with her from New York. “What are you doing here?” she demanded, looking none too pleased to find the house occupied.

Figuring his fact-finding would have to wait until later, Will bookmarked the page and quickly got the article off the screen. “Working.” He leaned back in the desk chair and clasped his hands behind his head. “What are you doing here?”

“I talked to your stepmother. Kate offered me a house-sitting gig for the rest of the week. She said she was going to a psych conference, your dad is in California on business and neither of them will be back until Sunday afternoon. I’m supposed to be here alone.”

“Well, there’s a problem with that.” Will grimaced, wishing he had asked Kate her plans before she’d put them into action. “I just offered my quarters to the pilot taking my flights for the rest of the week.”

Samantha set her belongings down with a clatter. “He can’t sleep in his own place?”

“The guy who is subbing for me lives in Wichita Falls. He wasn’t expecting to have to work this week, and there are no hotel rooms available.”

“So you were kicking me out of the airstrip?”

“No. I was going to ask my parents if it was okay, and offer you lodgings here.”

“With you.”

Actually, Will had been planning to bunk with one of his four married brothers—all of whom lived in the area—until he had read the archived news report. Now there was no way in hell he was going to leave her alone, to struggle against what had to be debilitating memories. Any more than he would have ever left a buddy behind in battle. He didn’t care how it looked.

“This place is plenty big enough for the two of us,” Will stated lazily, doing his best to hide the compassion welling up inside him. The rambling Victorian had housed Kate and Sam and their six kids comfortably. “It has seven bedrooms and four and a half baths.
